Why Do Old Headstones Become Unreadable?
Headstones carved before the 1920s were primarily made of soft marble or limestone. Over decades, exposure to acidic rainfall slowly dissolves the calcium carbonate in marble, causing the sharp edges of hand-carved lettering to soften and melt away. Modern memorials use high-density granite carved with deep V-sunk sandblasting, ensuring inscriptions remain crisp for centuries.
If you have ever visited a historic cemetery in Upstate South Carolina—such as Springwood in downtown Greenville or older churchyards across Pickens and Spartanburg—you have likely noticed a stark visual contrast.
Monuments erected in the late 1800s often look like melting blocks of sugar, their names and dates worn down to faint whispers. Yet, nearby monuments placed in the 1930s or 1940s still feature razor-sharp lettering that looks brand new.

The Chemistry of the "Sugar Stone"
Throughout the 19th century, marble was the stone of choice for grave markers. It was relatively soft, easy to quarry, and allowed stone carvers to hand-chisel delicate drapery, cherubs, and calligraphic lettering using simple steel hammers and chisels.
However, marble is composed primarily of calcium carbonate—the exact same chemical compound found in chalk.
Acidic Rainfall: When natural rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it becomes slightly acidic.
Dissolving the Surface: When acidic rain hits a marble headstone, a subtle chemical reaction occurs that slowly dissolves the stone's microscopic surface layer by layer.
The "Sugar" Effect: As the binder dissolves, individual calcite crystals loosen and fall away, giving the stone a rough, sugary texture and causing raised lettering to completely flatten over 80 to 100 years.
How Carving Methods Evolved: Hand Chisels to Pressurized Abrasives
It wasn't just the stone that changed—it was how letterforms were cut into the surface.
1890s: Hand-Chiseled Raised LetteringEarly Upstate artisans would carve away the background stone, leaving the letters raised in relief. While striking when new, raised letters are heavily exposed to weather on three sides, making them the first part of the stone to crumble away.
1920s: The Shift to High-Density GraniteAs industrial quarrying and transport improved, monument crafters transitioned to granite. Formed under extreme subterranean heat, granite consists of quartz and feldspar, making it completely impervious to acid rain and atmospheric decay.
Modern Era: Deep V-Sunk SandblastingInstead of raised letters, modern craftsmen cut into polished granite using high-pressure abrasive sandblasting. By cutting deep V-shaped grooves into the stone, light creates natural shadows inside the letter. Even if the stone accumulates dust or dew, the deep physical shadow ensures the name remains perfectly legible from yards away.
